Background of the Study
Cultural traditions play a significant role in shaping linguistic structures, particularly in oral narratives where language serves as a vehicle for transmitting history, values, and social norms. This study examines the effect of cultural traditions on Nigerian syntax by focusing on Yoruba oral narratives. Yoruba storytelling is deeply embedded in cultural rituals, using specific syntactic patterns that reflect historical continuity and communal identity (Olumide, 2023). Traditional narratives often employ distinctive sentence structures, repetition, and parallelism, which not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of the story but also facilitate memorization and oral transmission. These syntactic features are influenced by cultural practices and local belief systems, contributing to a unique linguistic identity. This research will analyze recorded Yoruba oral narratives, comparing them with more standardized language forms to determine the extent of cultural influence on syntax. The findings will offer insights into how traditional cultural elements are preserved in spoken language and how they adapt to modern communicative contexts (Olumide, 2023; Adebayo, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Although Yoruba oral narratives are recognized for their rich cultural and linguistic heritage, there is limited research on how cultural traditions specifically influence their syntactic structures. Existing studies often focus on content and performance without detailed analysis of the underlying syntactic patterns shaped by cultural practices. This gap limits our understanding of the role that traditional narrative techniques play in maintaining linguistic diversity. The absence of systematic analysis hampers efforts to preserve these syntactic features, which are crucial for the transmission of cultural identity. Addressing this issue is essential to document the unique syntactic elements of Yoruba oral narratives and to support their integration into modern language education (Olumide, 2023; Adebayo, 2024).
Objectives of the Study
To identify unique syntactic structures in Yoruba oral narratives.
To examine the influence of cultural traditions on these syntactic features.
To compare traditional narrative syntax with standardized language forms.
Research Questions
What syntactic structures are prevalent in Yoruba oral narratives?
How do cultural traditions shape these syntactic patterns?
How does traditional narrative syntax differ from standardized forms?
Significance of the Study
This study highlights the critical role of cultural traditions in shaping the syntactic structure of Yoruba oral narratives. The findings will benefit linguists, cultural historians, and educators by providing insights into the preservation of traditional language forms and informing language revitalization efforts. Understanding these influences will support the integration of indigenous syntactic features into modern education (Olumide, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to analyzing the syntactic structures of Yoruba oral narratives and does not extend to other Nigerian cultural traditions.
